The Klein Families of Alsace

French Soldiers in Franco Prussian War 1870 to 1871

My great grandmother was Caroline Klein who was born in Aswillier Alsace in 1868.

Her father was Valentine Klein. He was described as a gentleman on Caroline's marriage certificate.

Caroline came to England around the late 1880s and worked as a governess in Tiverton Devon and married in 1891 to Herbert Penny.

Her sister Louisa also lived in England.

So my question is would there be a historical reason why they came to England around that time?

As regards Valentine and his wife Salome Haury, I cannot find them in England. I have found their French citizenship documents from 1872 for Alsace.

So my second question is where can I find any records for them bearing in mind that I cannot speak or read French.

I would love to go to Alsace sometime in the future. It looks like a lovely place.

Any information you can give would help.

Regards,
Peter

Franco Prussian War 1870-1871
by: Suzele

Hi Peter,

I can only speculate about what might have caused Caroline to move to England...

The Franco-Prussian war occurred from 1870-1871 and the end result was Alsace became part of the German Empire.

According to my information around 50,000 Alsatians left leaving behind them their property, family and culture (mostly for other parts of France or Switzerland). These were mostly well educated, intellectual types or politicians.

Hope it helps,
Suzele

Finding Family Records in France
by: Suzele

Hi Peter

Regarding finding family records in France, I've written in a number of locations on the subject on GetAlsaced.com already...

The first place I would look is...

Will I Be Able to Find Ancestor Records in Alsace

And in general, I try to group all the genealogy related quetions and comments in one place...

Your Questions about Genealogy and France

Personally, if I really wanted to research my family tree in France and I didn't understand a word of French, I would consider hiring someone to help me.

Even if you know where to look, you will likely need some help writing letters to these people and occasionally translating documents.

If I ever know of anyone to recommend, I will most certainly put it on this website...

Hope it helps,
Suzele

Hi Peter
by: klein Gauthier

Hi Peter,

I came across this site and what was my surprise I found a branch of the family Klein that I has long sought.

Your ancestors KLEIN Valentin and Salome Haury were born in Asswiller and Valentin is the brother of one of my great - great grandfather Jean-Pierre KLEIN. I checked all the dates and are accurate.

Valentin and Salome left Asswiller in 1972 after the War of 1871. They owned a tile factory which traces still exist.

They went to Pantin near Paris with their three children: Caroline, Louise and Valentin.

Hi everyone,

Just a bit of information about the family name KLEIN. It's relatively common. These sorts of names you find in many areas and you really have to be sure that it is in fact your relative before you add it in to your family tree.

Hope it helps,

Clines/Klein
by: Russell Cline

The progenitor of my Cline lineage is Pieter Klein born 1575 in Postroff Now France. Stiemsall is another town, very close but its church kept the birth records. Eventually some of this line would end up in SW Ohio.

They landed in Louisiana in 1868, in Louisiana, Morris and Amalia had a daughter named Rachael Klein b. 1871.. from there some time later they moved to Chicago IL where Morris and Amelia had a son Joseph, Caleb and perhaps Solomon "according to 1880 census. The family was said to be from Alsace Lorraine... Morris and Amalia are my Great Great Grandparents. If you can help with Goldsticker or Klein connections.. any little bit, appreciated. Thank you.

George Klein was my great-great-great grandfather. Born 1809 and arrived at Ellis Island in 1849. I think he married a lady named Marguerite.

I can't seem to trace back any further than him.

Details unknown
by: John Klein

My name is John Klein. My family is reportedly from Alsace but that's all I know. I don't even know when my family actually emigrated to America. All I know is that they came here sometime shortly before WWII. I'd love to know all the details and if I have any family in Alsace but I have no idea how to begin my search.

Moritz Klein Family in NC
by: Stephanie Cline

To those who are seeking more information regarding Moritz Klein (B: 1684 Postorf, Steinsal, Alsace; D: 1776 - Lincoln County, North Carolina, USA) the Cline family of NC has a ton of information about this line through his son, Johan Sebastian, as well as links to the sons who settled further inland to the Ohio region. You can get in touch with the committee through their website, clinefamily(dot)name. They are very helpful in assisting those seeking more information regarding family roots. I will add, a few members have actually visited the original home village in Postorf in the 2010s, but have not found the local authorities to be very helpful in uncovering any records that go beyond what we already have through typical family tree websites.

Craig Whitacre and Joseph Cline, I too am a descendent of Moritz Klein. His son, Sebastian "Bostian" Klein/Cline, was my fifth great grandfather via the marriage of his daughter, Christina Cline (b. 1743) to Conrad Yoder (1725-1790), the third great grandfather of my mother, Martha Louise Yoder Irvine.
