Surname clarification needed

While researching civil records in Kientzhiem for surname "Jooss", have also encountered surname "Joss", sometimes for same person in a different record (birth vs marriage). Am wondering if these are totally different families, or variations of spelling surname for people in same extended family? Have also found both surnames in the 10yr tables for birth, death, marriage, 1792-1872 (Haut Rhin,Colmar, Kientzhiem). Thank you!

Yes. That sounds like a variation of spelling. There are so many of those.

And sometimes it's a misunderstanding of the handwritten record.

You think it's an A. I think it's an O. It can get pretty sketchy the way some people wrote.

Plus they have very different forms of cursive that is almost like a foreign language sometimes.

Especially the German language records.

Good luck with your searching,
Suzele
