Strasbourg opening hours shops & services on Saturday

by Charlotte
(Paris)

Hello,

I'm considering accepting a job offer in Strasbourg and I'm browsing the net to find out more about every day life in the city. One thing that scared me off a little was a blog that said everything's closed on Saturday afternoon.

Is there any truth in that?
I'll be working full time and will probably want to do my grocery shopping on Saturday afternoon...

Thanks,
Charlotte

Strasbourg Stores and Their Opening Hours
by: Suzele

Hi Charlotte,

That's a bit strange. Most shops everywhere in Alsace are open on Saturday. Other than a those businesses that cater only to other businesses, most stores and shops are open on Saturday.

Sunday is another story. Alsace is relatively closed on Sunday. Strasbourg being the largest city in the region, there may be some shops open, but as a rule, you need permission to open on Sunday.

Even the local markets are not held on Sunday in Alsace. They are usually on Saturdays or during the week.

Of course there are restaurants and hotels open on Sunday everywhere, but not every hotel and restaurant and not every hour of the day (for hotels mostly).

There are a few exceptions such as the last few weeks of December (although I can't imagine why anyone would choose to go shopping at that time except under duress).

By the way, you can find this sort of helpful information and quite a bit more in my book on Strasbourg and northern Alsace! : )

Good luck with your move!
Suzele
