Peter Naffziger of Lembach, France

by Myron D. Nofziger
(Ponder, Texas USA)

I'm looking up my family history.
I'm looking for Valentin and Peter Naffziger

I am the 7th generation of Valentin through our family history (which says he was born in Wessinburg, France in 1783 and worked on the Fleckenstein Castle Estate before moving to America in 1831).

I wanted to know if there were more records of the spelling of Naftzger or Naffziger that could be found in the Alsace or Lorraine areas, and what were their occupations if known.

Thank you

Naffziger in Alsace France
by: Suzele

Hi Myron,

If your Alsace ancestor was born in Weissenburg - now spelled Wissembourg - he was born in Alsace.

You might have relataives in the Palatinat area of modern Germany but not likely in the Lorraine region.

I say that because Lorraine is a good distance from Wissembourg. Relatives did move sometimes but not as much as modern times.

Wissembourg had a history as a safe place for Protestants - so your family may have emmigrated from unsafe areas in Switzerland, Holland and France - in the 1500s or 1600s.

Naffziger and other variations are very uncommon here in Alsace.

There are so many ways it could be spelled or pronounced 200 to 500 years ago whenever it first appeared.

Nafzger
Noftzger
Naffziger

From my research, the majority of people with this last name live in the US now.

Were your Alsace ancestors Amish or Mennonite or part of a non-Lutheran Protestant group?

Or almost everyone left and the remaining ancestors died out?

That's a very unusual situation.

Good luck with your research,
Suzele
