My Great Grandmother

by Ann
(San Diego CA Us)

In our family records it states that my Great Grandmother was born in STRASBOURG Germany on June 23, 1852. But not sure if it was Germany or France.

I know she was sent to the US before 1870 due to a war which was before WWI.

We are taking a cruise and one of the stops is STRASBOURG. I would like to find any records that might be there. Any suggestions as where to start looking?

Thank You

Definitely not Germany

Hi Ann,

Sorry I couldn't answer you sooner. I'm so very busy with tours at that time of year!

Your great grandmother was definitely not born in Germany in 1852. Although it's unlikely that she spoke French.

And she was sent away before 1870 because of the Franco Prussian war which did quite a lot of damage to Strasbourg. Not really to anywhere else in Alsace, but significant damage to its capital.

Most of the interesting parts of Strasbourg are not anywhere near the archives there. It's a bit of a shame that you will only be there for 1 day.

Also the records will be in badly handwritten French and there are a lot of them because it's the largest city in the region.

There is also a chance that the records were destroyed because of the war in 1870. I've looked for records from earlier periods in Strasbourg. There are definite holes in the records. Certain years, certain places. It really varies.

Happy researching,
Suzele
