My GG Grandfathers family Peiffer or Pfeiffer 1873

by Julie Donnell
(Genoa, Ohio USA)

I have been searching for information about my GG Grandrather’s family and come up empty. My Great Grandfather was George Peiffer, and he arrived in the US in Aug 1873 at age 22. A US census states that he was born in Alsace Lorraine. His death certificate lists father-August and no mother. On paperwork upon arriving the last name here is spelled Peiffer, Pfieffer and Peiffer. I have tried all these spellings in Ancestry and think I am close and find I am nowhere. Could you help with something like this? Even a tip, perhaps? Thank you.

If you don't have a name of a village or town, it's pretty hard to find more details here in Alsace.

Your best move is finding someone else who has the info you need.

If not, here's what I know about it...

Pfeiffer is more common. It could also be Pfiffer.

The census taker definitely misspelled it. And not everyone who emmigrated to the US was literate.

Most were literate enough to spell their names.

Who knows what happened.

Pfeiffer, Pfiffer Pfieffer are most likely the real spelling.

I've never seen a Peiffer or a Pieffer or a Piffer here. ever.

Wishing you lots of luck with your search,
Suzele
