Hi Lauren,

That name is a very common name in the French-speaking world because it means "All Saints" as in All Saints Day after Halloween.

It's still a holiday in France - where people put flowers on the graves.

It's more common in Lorraine than Alsace. Most Alsatian last names are more Germanic like "Feucht"
as you've probably noticed.

It's more challenging to find records before 1789 because that's when official state records began.

Before 1789, you're looking for church records. And you can find them. They exist as long as they haven't been destroyed by fire/war before being digitized.

Do you know which villages your family comes from? Because that's how you're going to find any records.

You start with the town or village in most cases in France.

So while researching records from your US ancestors, hopefully you'll find some mention of a village or town to help you get a place to start.

Usually one village name is enough to get you going and it often leads to more.

That's been my experience.

Wishing you a lot of luck and maybe someone with common ancestors will share something about it here.

Suzele
