The hardest thing to do...
by: Suzele

Hi Eileen,

I wish I had some better news for you. Finding the home village or town of an Alsace ancestor (or from most anywhere in France) without any other clues is hard.

There are so many villages here that it is quite a job to do.

I can tell you that I've never heard of this last name here in Alsace. There are some people with the name, but not many.

It's certainly not the most common name here.

I would recommend looking everywhere you can in your family history and past discussions with family for any shred of info giving you an idea of where.

Those are often the best ways to get this info.

And then posting everything you know. Someone like me might be able to take that info and give you something helpful.

In any case, you're not alone. I get requests all the time asking for info about a relative with no idea of where they lived in Alsace.

All they know is that they lived in Alsace. And sometimes they only know that they lived in Alsace Lorraine.

Just curious, if you do find yourself at a dead end in finding official records, what else would you like to know about your relatives from Alsace?

I know quite a lot about the history of Alsace, its customs and traditions, what they were most worried about and how they tried to resolve their problems.

It's not official records about where Peter Duflo was born, but it is interesting to know more about your family tree here from Alsace.

Happy hunting,
Suzele

Possible Leads
by: Anne

Is your great grandfather, Peter Duflo (abt 1850 - 1935), buried in the cemetery at St. Peter's Church in Croghan, NY? His wife, Mary Strife (or Streiff) is a distant cousin of mine. Her grandfather (one of my 3rd great grandfathers) and several children (including her mother) immigrated to Lewis County, NY in about 1852 and settled in Dayansville, NY (later New Bremen, NY). There was a large group of immigrants from Alsace Lorraine who settled in Lewis County. My relatives (Ballevre or Ballever - which was Americanized to Bolliver or Boliver or Bolivar) were from the village of Altviller, which I believe is in the Moselle region.

I am not sure about the French spelling of Du Flo. I've seen Doufle and Douflott in some old U.S. records. Keep in mind that the U.S. records, especially in the early years were likely created by Americans who were trying to phonetically spell names that were being pronounced by non-English speakers. Hope that this helps.
