Merckling genealogy Alsace France

by Karen
(New York)

I'm looking for Jean Phillip Merckling or Mirtling and Salome Peter and their families from Schillersdorf, Bas-Rhin Alsace Lorraine. Also, what was the situation there after 1800?

Hi Karen,

You should be able to find this information yourself with a little research in the Alsace archives.

Schillersdorf is a small village in Northern Alsace so there won't be tons of records to look through - even if you don't know the exact birth year or marriage year or death year.

Usually once you find one of their records, it leads to the others. Because other people are named in them.

Sometimes you get lucky and find other useful info.

I find out all sorts of interesting things when I take people on ancestry tours to their villages. It's always a treasure hunt sort of thing. You don't know what you'll find. But you usually find something!

Same thing for genealogy record searches. As long as the records weren't destroyed by fire or war or both. That happens too.

If you're wondering why some of your ancestors left Alsace, it depends. There are a number of possible reasons. The more you know about your family, the better educated my guess would be.

Happy hunting,
Suzele
