Alsace Ancestors from Wissembourg
by: Suzele

Hi Alexander,

Have you looked in the online archive for Wissembourg?

If not, that's a good place to start.

Records from the 1770s to pre 1789 might be a little trickier to find.

There were no state records until after the French Revolution in 1789.

Church records and some official records but not birth certificates, marriage certificates or death certificates like we're used to nowadays.

You can find some church records in the archives too.

There are Catholic and Protestant records for Wissembourg.

Just a warning that church records tend to be hard to read due to very bad penmanship.

Also Latin, French or German cursive isn't easy to read in general.

Wishing you lots of luck,
Suzele
