looking for my family in Metz

by Carol
(Minneapolis, Minnesota USA)

My grandfather, Peter Vincent Wagner was born in August 1872 in Metz. He was in the Kaiser's Navy but I have been unable to find any records. He next appeared on the 1906 Canadian census, living in Howell, Saskatchewan. This was not surprising since my aunt and uncle were born there. He died in Michigan in 1933, as far as I know he never went back to France or Germany. The Canadian census says he arrived in 1901. My great-grandfather was also named Peter Wagner born about 1838 in Metz or Au Metz. My great grandmothers name was Catherine Staub (sp?) born about 1836. My father and all his siblings are no longer living. How do I find out about the family my grandfather left behind? How do I find out if I still have any family in the Alsace-Lorraine area? Thank you in advance for any advice.

Lorraine or Alsace
by: Suzele

I can say with almost 100% certainty that your family is from Lorraine.

Metz is decidedly in Lorraine not Alsace.

Not saying someone couldn't have moved to or from Alsace, but Metz is a safe distance away.

Good luck with your searching,
Suzele
