Looking for info on Zehner lineage in Rauwiller Alsace

by Margaret
(Louisiana)

I have traced our family tree back to Henry Gottfried Zehner and Sophie Girardin to the village of Rauwiller. Their son, Henry, was born there in 1852. Henry Gottfried Zehner's father's name was Louis Zehner born in 1787, but I don't have any further information than that.

Thank you so much!

Rauwiller Alsace ancestors

Hi Margaret,

It's not easy to find records past 1789. Mainly because you're looking in church records. And they weren't required by law in the same way they were in France after the revolution.

You can find them. The church records are in the online Alsace archives. But they're really hard to read.

Like whoever did the church records had some special training on how to write so badly you can't read anything. And if they're Catholic, they might be in Latin too.

But they're just as hard if they're in French or German. It's really a competition in bad penmanship.

So you might need a professional who can do this for you. At least until ChatGPT learns how ;-)

But the good news, is Rauwiller is a tiny village so their records won't be a mountain of data to process either.

What info are you looking for exactly?

I've been in that part of Alsace more than a few times for Ancestry tours. Not specifically Rauwiller but I do know the area well enough.

Ancestry tours are fun ways to go treasure hunting for new info or context on the info you already have or to just make contact with the locals where your ancestors came from.

Wishing you lots of luck with your search,
Suzele
