Kopschina in Neunkirchen, Saarland

by Barb Kopshina
(Sykesville, Pennsylvania, USA)

Hi,

I'm looking for the surname Kopschina. There was an arrest warrant for my great, great grandfather in this district in 1887 for avoiding serving in the military. By 1885, however, he was already living in the United States.

Would love to learn more about where and how to research this area. Am willing to pay a reasonably priced genealogist also.

Thanks in advance,
Barb

Hi Barb,

I would love to help you, but you are talking about a part of Germany not Alsace. The Saarland is just north of France, specifically Lorraine.

It was briefly part of France during the French Revolution, but it has always been a Germanic area.

It's interesting that your relative protested against his required military duty. That also happened in Alsace.

Originally in France there were a certain number of slots required from each village and town for military duty, not every man had to go.

But the newly formed German State in 1871 required every man to serve.

I'd be happy to help if your research takes you into Alsace or anywhere in France : )

Hope it helps,
Suzele
