John Jacob Holtzapffel 1768-1835

I am English and have been reading about John Jacob Holtzapffel who came to England in 1792. He came from Alsace and I wondered if he was an Huguenot.

Hi Terry,

It is entirely possible that this person was a Huguenot.

Alsace was one of the few places in France that was relatively safe for protestants.

It's not as simple as that, but they were not hunted down and killed in Alsace.

His last name is not something we normally find here in Alsace.

But there were a number of protestant groups that relocated to Alsace at some point or another temporarily.

Good luck with your research,
Suzele
