Henrissat and Dietrich

by Heather Tamara
(Atlanta, GA, USA)

I am from the US, and currently visiting Alsace. My great-grandmother, Mary Rose Dietrich was born in Rougemont Le Chateau on 20 Feb 1887.

Her parents were Joseph Dietrich and Rosalie Henrissat. They were both born in 1860, I believe. I also believe they were married in Alsace in 1881, and emigrated to the US in 1892 (1886 alone then with family?).

I've found a little info on the Henrissat side of the family, but not so much on this line of Dietrich.

While I am here, I hope to learn more. If I could find a marriage record, maybe I can verify more about the Dietrich family and where they were from.

Rougemont-le-Chateau
by: Barbara

Hello, Heather, I live in Asheville North Carolina. My grandmother was also born in Rougemont in 1887. The French archives have done a great job at uploading the census records which should be a great help to you. Note that after the Franco Prussian war the Germans were given a lot of French land as part of the peace treaty. Many families left for other areas at that point to avoid living under German rule. My ggg grandfather was from Rouffach (un vrai Rouffachois), but he picked up his large family and relocated to Rougemont in la territoire de Belfort. His daughter left Rougemont for the USA about the same time your relatives did in the 1890s. Good luck with your genealogy. Hope you had an opportunity to visit little Rougemont while you were in France. Barbara

Migration after 1871
by: Suzele

Just a little extra information about the migrations after the Franco Prussian War in 1870-1871, the number of Alsatians who left is very very minor.

When we look at the numbers, a very small percentage of Alsatians left. Mostly French/non Alsatians who had no ties to the land. Which was the minority.
