Ernest Marks (Marke?) Born 1835 Alsace-Lorraine

Trying to find more information on my great-great-great grandfather Ernest Marks (Marke?) and his family, Born 1835 Alsace-Lorraine and immigrated to U.S. with citizenship on Oct 13, 1856 in Indiana County, PA. I visited Alsace-Lorraine in November 2021. I was not aware of what would be needed to look for family records and while in Strasbourg, the tour guide recommended I go to city hall, but it doesn't seem like it will be that easy based on what I've searched through here (very helpful!) and conversation with the guide I had. Any information you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Marie,

Unfortunately most tour guides don't know much about ancestry. I'm probably one of the very few guides who is.

But that's another story...

The tricky part of finding records for your family is knowing the name of the village or town.

Everything starts with the name of the village.

And after decades of working with ancestry + as a tour guide here, they are rarely from a big city like Strasbourg.

They are always from a tiny village.

That's been my experience.

And there are 1000's of them here in Alsace. And that's not including Lorraine.

You really need the name of the village in most cases.

And if you ever find it, and find some records, hire a better tour guide when you visit ;)

Wishing you lots of luck on your search,
Suzele
