Curious about Sitter surname in Alsace

by Laura Setter Reisdorph
(Centralia WA)

My family (SITTER) is from Zilling 1768-1840, Hanviller 1739, Wintersbourg 1708, Lutzelstein 1636 (Petit Pierre) and Berstett 1610.

They immigrated to Ontario around 1840.

It looks like Sitter is a fairly common name. Does anyone know more about Sitter in Alsace? I see it also in Baden.

Thank you!

Sitter

Just wanted to add a little info for you.

Sitter, Setter, Sittler, and many other spellings exist for this name.

The question is more what spelling is most common in the areas where your family is from?

Congratulations on having village names for your ancestors by the way.

That is one of the hardest parts of this sort of research.

Happy hunting,
Suzele
