Birth records for My Alsace Ancestors in Selestat

by Bill
(Bethlehem Pa. USA)

Hi,

I'm seeking the birth record of my great grandfather Martin Kohler born July 15 1870. His father's name was Ignatius Kohler born 1842. On Martins's passport, he claims he left Selestat in 1882 bound for America. Both Martin and his father settled and died in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. Any help is appreciated.

Bill

You have a good chance of finding your Alsace genealogy records
by: Suzele

Hi Bill,

There are no guarantees, but you have a very good chance of finding what you are looking for.

Hopefully, the records you want are in Selestat. They could be in a nearby village too.

There's always the possibility that they are in a town or village further away from Selestat (but in most cases, it's unlikely).

Knowing the name of the town or village is the most important part.

You have the names of your relatives and some approximate dates too.

You just need to look in the record books of Selestat (and maybe some nearby villages). You'll likely find what you need.

The good news is your records should be in French (much easier to read than the German style of handwriting).

Even for those fluent in German, it's not easy to read!

Hopefully you're making progress with your Alsace family tree!

Are you interested in knowing more about your family (and all the strange things they did and believed)?

You wouldn't believe their customs for when their wives were ready to give birth.

And don't get me started on many of their other superstitions.

This is one of my favorite areas of study. And I'd love to learn more about what your interests are about your Alsace ancestors.

Happy searching,
Suzele
