Ancestors in Postroff and Hirschland in Alsace France

by Jim
(USA)

Hi everyone,

My ancestor came from Postroff in Lorraine and many were baptized in neighboring Hirschland which is in Alsace. They were Evangelical Lutherans.

I was wondering if the current churches in both Postroff and Hirschland were either Catholic or Protestant (Lutheran).

Thanks for any help,
Jim

Your Protestant Alsace and Lorraine Relatives
by: Suzele

Hi Jim,

I'm not an expert on these two tiny villages right on the border of Lorraine and Alsace. They are literally less than 10 minutes by car from each other but one is in Lorraine and one is in Alsace.

Northern Alsace to be specific. And a pretty rural area too.

What I can tell you is that both villages have a protestant church. This doesn't surprise me too much. This part of Alsace had a tendency to be protestant.

But depending on WHEN your family was there, it may have been different.

Alsace tended to be tolerant of Protestants and even some areas were extremely Protestant. Lorraine has a different history (mostly). So this could have been why they went to Alsace.

Or a completely different reason. Maybe some of the family came from Hirschland. People from neighboring villages marrying...it happened especially with little bitty villages.

Postroff at the moment doesn't have a Lutheran protestant church, but Hirschland does.

Possibly another reason.

There were different varieties of Protestantism in Alsace (although mostly Lutheran).

If you're interested in religious history here in Alsace and especially related to your family genealogy, let me know.

Alsace history, cultural traditions, customs and some of the unusual beliefs and habits of this region is one of my favorite subjects.

Happy researching,
Suzele
