Ancestors homesite in Alsace

by Marcie Thompson
(Comfort, Texas, US)

How do I locate my ancestors homesite? Augustin Weber was born in 1823 in Mitzach and the ship's list of passengers show it as well. His father, Pierre, and family were also on the ship and had Mitzach listed as place of residence. They arrived in Texas in 1844. I would love to come for a visit and it would be incredible if I could possibly see where they lived.

Hi Marcie,

You're already doing so well because you have the name of their village. 90% of the people who contact me don't have that info at all. And it's so hard to find.

Finding their actual home, it can happen but one - it has to still be there.

It might be.

And if they sold it to another family to pay for their trip to the US (and so they could buy things to set up house there), that info may be lost.

But if it stayed in the family, there's a better change you can find out.

Like when I do tours with descendents of Alsatians - and I've done plenty from the Castroville area - sometimes we talk to enough people and find out where their house was.

Especially if they still have family in the village.

It takes some luck and some effort.

That's how it's worked for me.

Lots of luck with your search,
Suzele
