Alsace Family Connection

by Marie
(Australia)

HI There...
My name is Marie. For quite a few years I've been struggling to find details about my great grandfather who traveled to Australia in 1899.

His name was Ernest Stockheim. On his travel document, he claimed to have been born in Mannheim in 1868.

Upon his arrival he rarely spoke of his former life, even to the family he created in Australia. We have no idea of the family he left behind. My grandfather was particularly patchy with details as the two of them became estranged when my grandfather married my grandmother.

He did speak German and French, claimed to be a linguist and my great aunt claimed he came from Alsace.

I have looked all over for further information. I am unable to read in French and German. I was wondering if there would be anyway you could help me get to the truth?

I am hoping to travel to Europe in the near future, and would love to explore what his world might have been like.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Marie,

I'm not sure how much I can help you. Mannheim is in Germany and I don't do research in Germany.

If your family was from somewhere in Alsace, I could probably help you in some way.

Did anyone talk about other towns or villages?

Hope it helps,
Suzele
