France and Genealogy

France and genealogy may seem like a scary subject for English speakers...

But genealogy is all about knowing where to look which is much easier when you are dealing with your home country and your native language.

And knowing where to look in France is much easier if you know how France works.

The French tend to keep very good records of their citizens, so usually the information you are looking for is out there waiting for you...

But you often need to know some history of the area where your ancestors lived too.

And in Alsace it can get complicated...

Alsace officially changed languages quite a few times since 1871 which means the names of places may have changed a little or a lot.

Sometimes villages disappeared because everyone was killed or forced to move.

You're welcome to post questions or comments here about your research. There are a lot of people researching their Alsatian family trees here...

And I wanted to create a space just for you to help you share and exchange information with each other : )

If you're looking for someone to help you with your research, here's where you can go to get some help.

I hope you find some useful information here about researching your family's history in France...
