Tracing the family Ott

by Debbie
(Kent England)

I am trying to trace our family tree. Due to a will he wrote we believe John Ott came from Strasbourg.

We have worked out his date of birth to be around 1738. He married in England in 1768/69.

He mentions vineyards in the will and his occupation in England was an oil leather dresser.

Any information would be great.

Hi Debbie,

You have a somewhat difficult situation as your ancestor was born before civil records were required.

The good news is that you know he is from Strasbourg, so there's a chance you can find something possibly through church records.

In Strasbourg there should be both protestant and catholic records if they were not destroyed which is always a possibility unfortunately.

The other challenge is that the records are likely the worst chickenscratch you've ever seen. Church records are the worst for some reason ; )

Hopefully he was protestant and the records may be in French or German. Otherwise they are probably in Latin.

Hope it helps,
Suzele
