Researshing the Conrad Family of Alsace, France - East Prussia? Theophile Conrad, Father Chrisitain "Martin" Conrad, Mother Carolyn Schwing

by Linda Conrad
(Louisvillle, KY USA)

I am looking for information on my Conrad roots. According to my records Theophile Conrad, states he is from Alsace, however, his uncles claim to be from Germany? His uncles came to Louisville KY USA around 1838-1846, his father Martin came to Louisville with his second wife Magdalen around 1848, and Theo after training to be a master tanner in Paris arrived in Louisville around 1856. Theo married Mary Ann Krieger's. The family is mingled in with cousins marring into the Krieger family. Both families had glue companies and tanneries among other businesses. Needing to find out who Martin brothers are and if their mother traveled with them to the US via New Orleans, LA USA. Martin had a glue company and according to accounts was very wealthy while living in Alsace. Theo attending private schools from 6 - 14 years. The step mother sent him away to school and when the left for America, left him as an appreciate with a man in Paris who was a tanner. Theo become very wealthy and built a castle in Louisville. It was know as "Conrad's Castle" until 1990 when it became a museum and know is known as The Conrad/Caldwell House Museum. It is said to resemble his boyhood home along the Rhine. Any information you have would be extremely helpful.

Conrads from Alsace
by: Patsy Conrad

I am ninth generation Conrad living near Winston Salem, NC. My father's family came from Alsace. They were Moravians (aka Unity of the Brethren).Alsace was at one time part of Germany but later became part of France. The first to come over from Alsace was Johann Jacob Conrad, he came with his brother George. The date of the trip was 1737 and the name of the ship was "St Andrews Galley". They settled in Lancaster county,, Pennsylvania. Johann had a son by the name of Christian.
