My Trip to Scherwiller Looking for Family Ancestors

by Caroline
(California USA)

I traveled there about 20 years ago. My grandmother Ernestine Hugele was born in Scherwiller. My great grandmother Josephine Ernst was born in Chatenois.

The time I was in Scherwiller was an early afternoon and it appeared all of the shops were closed, like a siesta time in Mexico.

I did visit the cemetery and also something like a town hall where I was able to get a copy of my grandmother's birth certificate.

Since that time, I have discovered relatives in this country and there. It was truly an enlightening experience.

I felt I discovered a family I didn't even know I had.

Sincerely,
Caroline
California

So Great to Hear about Your Trip to Alsace!
by: Suzele

Hi Caroline,

I am so happy that you were able to come to Alsace and connect with relatives here!

It's very true that shops close down at lunch time often from 12 until 2.

There are even some shops that are only open during certain hours of the day because they are not enough employees to stay open all the time.

France and Alsace in particular is a different world and (in my opinion) a world worth visiting...

I hope you make it back to Alsace some time!
