Ancestors in Chatenois and Ban de Sapt

I am looking for parish records of birth and marriage before 1718. There do not appear to films of this time. Do the records still exist locally in Chatenois?

I have the same question regarding Ban de Sapt records before 1645.

Thanks fo any help you can provide.

Hi Walter,

Records before the late 1700s were required by the French government, so there's no guarantee that they existed to begin with.

And the further back you go, the more likely they will be damaged or destroyed. Chatenois had a horrible fire in the 1800s that burned down a good portion of the town. It's possible that is one of the reasons you haven't found them.

Also church records are some of the hardest to read that I've ever seen. Usually in Latin but even in French or German, the penmanship is usually horrible.

Not sure where you were looking for the records, but they may very well not exist. This has happened to me in a number of areas. Certain periods are just missing.
