Johan Jacob Hipqe (or Hipke)

by Amy Whipkey
(Bixby, Oklahoma, USA)

I have been researching my family tree and have found that Johan Jacob Hipqe (or Hipke)(changed to Whipkey after he arrived in America) was born in Wissembourg in 1739.

He stowed away on a ship to America when he was 16 and all of my relatives can be traced, by blood, directly to him, all 4000+ of them.

I would like to know how I can find relatives, if any exist, in Wissembourg.

How to Find Your Relatives in Alsace
by: Suzele

Hi Amy,

My first recommendation would be to read all of the questions and answers here in the Genealogy and France section of GetAlsaced.com.

I think there are a lot of good ideas and insights into what might help you find what you are looking for...

According to this post on French Genealogy getting in touch with Wissembourg would be a good first step!

Perhaps finding a few French genealogy enthusiast websites and posting invitations to anyone with the same last name to contact you...

Of course you'll need to find someone who can help you with the French (or just use Google Translate) although I suggest you mention that you are using translation software so they won't think you're strange.

It may take awhile, but if you've been researching your family tree for awhile, then you are already probably very patient ; )

But nothing will take the place of a genealogist who speaks French and even knows the ins and outs of the French system.

Unfortunately that isn't me...

If I ever run into one who also speaks English, I will most definitely share that information on GetAlsaced.com

Good luck with your research!
Suzele
