Looking for the village of Alcon in Alsace in 1861

by Verdel

I am trying to find the location of my grandfather's birth. The name of the town is ALCON in 1861, not sure about the exact spelling, but it is spelled this way on his military record.

I believe it may be a town, village, community that no longer exists, maybe destroyed or merged into a larger place, or the name changed.

Are there any old maps for Alsace in 1861? Where do I look?

Finding Villages That Have Disappeared
by: Suzele

Hi Verdel,

I have never heard of that name in Alsace and it doesn't even sound Alsatian...

It could perhaps be a misspelling or it was not written clearly to begin with...it does happen...

I suggest you start with the family name and work backwards.

Do a search in the French Yellow Pages for your family and see what village names turn up. Chances are your relatives still live in the same area but the village name is different.

You can find more detailed instructions on how to use the yellow pages to do genealogical research in France here...

Good luck with your research! : )
