Can you recommend a good base location in Alsace?

by Ashley
(USA)

Suzele,

Your site is really great! It has been a lot of help as I am trying to plan a trip for my Mom and myself to the Alsace region in May.

We have a week in the area and are flying into Zurich. We have decided to rent a car so that we can get to off-the-beaten path type places.

We originally thought that moving hotels 2 or 3 times might be the right approach but now I am thinking that just staying in one town as a base might work better. Strasbourg? Colmar? or somewhere else?

Thanks,
Ashley

Good Base Locations for Visiting Alsace
by: Suzele

Hi Ashley,

It kind of depends on what you want to do...

If you want to spend some time in Strasbourg or Colmar, then you could use either city as a base.

Colmar is the largest centrally located city in Alsace.

But if you are planning on spending a lot of time on the wine road or tourist sites that aren't in cities, you might prefer to stay in one of the many villages in Alsace.

Less parking problems. Less traffic to deal with. And it's hard to get lost in a village. Most of them are pretty small.

And more charm...

As you can see on my Alsace map, there are plenty of villages to choose from.

And you can see the advantages of staying in different villages and cities here...like what's interesting nearby...and what hotels are nearby...

You could go with the well known Alsatian cities and villages. They have more hotels, restaurants, shops, and people. Most everyone knows about these villages, Ribeauvillé, Riquewihr, Equisheim, etc...

Of you could stay in the "next village over" if you want more peace and quiet. Hunawihr, Bergheim, Rouffach, etc...

And if you're looking for an active nightlife, stay in Colmar or Strasbourg.

May is usually a great time to visit Alsace. Hopefully by then the vineyards will be nice and green!

Have fun!
Suzele
