World War Two Memorials in Alsace

by Tom
(Riverside, CA)

As an American, it was heartwarming to see the World War Two monument to the U.S. Army on top of the hill overlooking Sigolsheim and Kientzheim.

The American flag was flying and there were fresh flowers at the base of the flag. What a wonderful tribute from the Alsatian people.

This hill was the sight of the bloody Battle of Colmar. Many French soldiers died in this battle and they are laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery up the hill just a short walk away from the American monument.

The view from the top of this hill is great too.

I saw several references to the US Army throughout Alsace including a plaque on the side of the Kaysersberg church.

Alsace has to be one of the most beautiful places on the planet. These monuments honoring American soldiers were just an added bonus!

Some people back in the US think the French don't appreciate what the US did in WWII. How wrong they are!
