If You've Only Got One Day in Alsace....
by: Suzele

Hi Oded,

A lot of people ask me what they "should" do in Alsace, and I always have a difficult time answering their questions...not because I can't think of anything, but because there are so many possibilities...

For visiting beautiful villages and hiking, almost every village listed at Find a Hotel in Alsace would do.

So perhaps you can see my dilemma...

Now if you have a particular fascination with World War One or World War Two, that would narrow down the possibilities to a few villages.

Alsace only has a few local cheeses and they are quite pungent (strong smelling) so they aren't for everyone, but many French villages have cheese shops with very good cheese so that doesn't narrow down your choices much.

Munster and the surrounding area is where most of the Munster cheese is made in Alsace. You'll find dairy farms in many of the villages near Munster, but you can buy Munster in cheese shops as well.

Or try it in most Alsatian restaurants.

Mont Sainte Odile is a fantastic place for hiking in the Vosges mountains, but so is Niederbronn les Bains, La Petite Pierre, Lichtenberg, Saverne, Le Donon and Schirmeck.

In quite a few villages you can do short hikes to medieval castles too (because there are over 60 castles in Alsace).

From Ottrott you can hike up to Mont Sainte Odile...

And every single village has hiking trails through the vineyards. Many villages are only a few miles or kilometers from each other so you could hike from village to village depending on your stamina.

The best way to decide what to do with your one day in Alsace is go to Find a Hotel in Alsace and click on the villages that look interesting...

You'll find lots of ideas for sites and attractions nearby there.

And if you have a specific question and you can't find an answer...

Just ask me!

Hope it helps,
Suzele
