Bus services in July and August

by Dick
(UK)

We are thinking about a holiday in Alsace in July or August. Although we have a car, we would like to use "Réseau 67" bus services as well.

The online timetables finish on 2 July and I understand from Vialsace that the ones for July and August are not uploaded until June.

Vialsace also say that "many" routes run in the holidays but I would like to be reassured that it is still possible to get around reasonably well by bus in the summer, even if the buses are less frequent than at other times. (I'm familiar with the usual pattern of French buses geared to work and school times, but I've also come across a few rural areas where buses don't run at all in July and August.)

Thanks for a great and well-informed website - which is why I feel confident about asking a rather obscure question!

Using the Buses in the Summer in Alsace
by: Suzele

Hi Dick,

You are right that many French bus routes alter their schedules for July and August. And Alsace is no different.

I wouldn't bet on most rural bus routes being available all the time in July and August.

The only bus routes that will likely continue or even increase the number of buses will be those that go to tourist destinations.

If you're planning to visit Alsace in July or August, you might want to have a plan B itinerary in case some of the buses aren't running.

Perhaps use the train schedules to create some travel plans or combine the train with bike riding. If you can manage a few miles or kilometers on a bike, you'll have access to quite a few villages.

Not to mention you'll get to enjoy some fantastic scenery...

Hope it helps,
Suzele
