Volerie des Aigles which means "Flight of the Eagles" is a birds of prey show in Alsace...
And performed in the courtyard of Kientzheim castle.
The entire show is performed in French but...
It's very intimate and hands on so everyone in my family (who doesn't understand French) still really liked it...
Volerie des Aigles is also conveniently located near Haut Koenigsbourg castle and Montagne des Singes if you want to spend the entire day in the area...
Because the show is done outside...
This Birds of Prey show in Alsace is usually open from April to mid November...
And you can see exactly when they are open here under "Info Practiques"...But it's all in French...
And Volerie des Aigles is not just a birds of prey show...
They've been around since 1968 and they've been raising and protecting endangered birds of prey ever since...
The show is one of the ways that they educate us all about these birds...
And raise money to continue their work...
Before the show you can walk around the castle ruins and look at the different birds of prey that will be in the show...
They have quite a collection of different birds...
And the castle is interesting...
During the show the birds fly over your heads...sometimes just over your head!
It doesn't matter where you sit, you'll get a good view because the bird handlers move around the circle with the different birds...
You will see hawks, eagles, condors, vultures, and falcons...
Your children will get the chance to get up close to some of these birds if they want to...
And you might even get to handle a bird yourself if you raise your hand when they ask towards the end of the show...
The show is definitely more interesting if you understand French but...
Alsace is at the crossroads of quite a few different countries and languages and the show is designed to be fun regardless of what language you speak...
If you're driving to the show...
Because Haut Koenigsbourg castle is very well known...
You can follow the signs to Haut Koenigsbourg from highway A35 (also known as RN 83) until...
You see the sign pointing you to "Volerie des Aigles"...
Or if you won't have a car...
You can take a shuttle from the Selestat train station...
The shuttle starts running in mid March Saturdays, Sundays, and French public holidays only.
From the beginning of June until the beginning of September you can catch the shuttle every day. After that it's back to weekends and holidays until the end of the year.
And if that's not enough...
Here's a map of the surrounding area...
If you prefer a paper map, you can get one here|
